My name is Sandra Olsen. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and a Masters degree in Education and Technology. I have been teaching second grade for twenty-three, wonderful years. I very much enjoy teaching second grade. It is a magnificent age for true learning. The children are halfway between the magical stage of early childhood yet are just entering the stage of learning how to reason. They are so eager to learn about their world. They are ready to take a big leap in reading and comprehending on a higher level. The world opens up to their curious and searching minds. Each child is unique. To meet their needs, and to keep ahead of their insatiable desire to learn, I find I am always needing to learn more myself. What a joy it is to work with and for these precious children!

My Philosophy of Education We are barely beginning to understand the ability of a young child to learn. A child is so ready to learn, they are actively seeking learning opportunities. Even their strong desire to play and exercise is based in a hunger to learn. Each child has the right to learn in an environment where they are respected and where education is respected. If new knowledge is presented in a way that makes learning interesting and intriguing, they can learn astonishing amounts of information on deeper levels than we imagine. Their capacity to acquire new vocabulary far exceeds adults. A child's biggest limitation in learning should not be a rigid curriculum; but, rather, a rich journey of opportunity, based on acquired skills, and largely determined by their curiousity and guided exploration.
